Excessive Underarm Sweating Treatment
Excessive sweating, known as hyperhidrosis, is a condition where the sufferer sweats more than normal, often at inappropriate times.
Sweating is the method by which the body regulates its temperature and most people produce about a litre of sweat per day. However, those with excessive sweating or hyperhidrosis can produce up to ten times that and it often causes great distress and even prevents sufferers from having a normal social and professional life. For this reason those suffering with the condition are always seeking treatment to stop excessive underarm sweating.
Dr Maria Gonzalez of the Specialist Skin Clinic in Cardiff has a great deal of experience in treating those with excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) and is able to give patients advice and guidance on the different treatments available to stop excessive sweating.
There are specially designed antiperspirants available, containing aluminium chloride*, which are usually prescribed first for excessive underarm sweating. Iontophoresis* is another potential option for excessive sweating if the antiperspirants are ineffective in stopping excessive underarm sweating. This procedure involves a low voltage electrical current being passed through the problem area and some patients find this very effective, particularly for the hands and feet involved by excessive sweating.
If injected into the underarm area this toxin can block the nerves that supply the sweat glands and prevent the glands from producing sweat for a period of up to six months so temporarily improving excessive under arm sweating.
Surgery* is a long-term solution to excessive sweating and it involves either removing the sweat glands or dividing the nerves that supply the sweat glands. Many patients are reluctant to embark on the surgical route as they wish to avoid the associated risks and side effects that may be involved in treating excessive underarm sweating. So there has been much research into finding a safe, long-term solution to the problem of excessive sweating.
